Finnish ice hockey fan’s candid interview goes viral after World Championship victory
A lighthearted interview with a young woman celebrating Finland’s men’s ice hockey World Championship gold at Helsinki’s Market Square on Sunday has become a social media sensation. Nella Salonen, 24, an interior architecture student, has drawn widespread attention for her unfiltered and humorous remarks about the significance of the victory.
Salonen told Yle during the celebrations that the win meant little to her beyond an opportunity to “brag about it” and “let loose.” Yle reports that her comments quickly spread online, with many praising her genuine and relatable demeanor. While some social media users speculated that she had taken the day off work due to the previous night’s festivities, Salonen clarified that she was at her job at an event center when contacted by reporters.
“I wouldn’t say I have much to offer. I’m just a regular person who said something silly,” she said, downplaying the sudden attention. Salonen estimated that her newfound fame would fade by the weekend, adding, “Then there won’t be a single message on my phone anymore.”
Though she does not consider herself a hockey enthusiast—citing the sport’s fast pace and small puck as reasons for her disinterest—Salonen expressed admiration for Kouvola Arena’s design. “Kouvola Arena is probably one of the finest in the world. I admire it and want to emulate it in my own design work,” she told Yle.
Salonen recounted arriving at Market Square just 15 minutes before the interview and deciding to speak to the camera on a whim. After the brief exchange, she returned home. While some online commenters compared her to the infamous “Meet You at the Square” man from Finland’s 2009 World Championship celebrations, Salonen dismissed the parallels. “I haven’t seen that. But someone commented that there’s some video where a girl answered that her favorite animal is a bunny and to all other questions said ‘no.’ I feel I can relate to that, but I’m not the same person,” she said.
Despite the playful criticism, Salonen stood by her original remarks. “I still stand by what I said,” she affirmed. She also revealed that she had consumed one alcoholic drink before the interview, though she maintained that her comments were made in jest.
When asked about Monday’s gold medal celebrations, Salonen appeared unaware of the ongoing events, replying, “Oh right, are there some celebrations today?” before returning to work. MTV Uutiset noted that her interview provided a humorous contrast to the typically fervent national pride surrounding the victory, offering a moment of levity amid the festivities.
