A striking celestial event will grace Finland’s evening sky tonight, as the waxing crescent Moon aligns with three planets—Venus, Jupiter, and Mercury—in a rare visual convergence. The phenomenon, visible to the naked eye under clear conditions, offers a unique opportunity for skywatchers to observe multiple bright objects in close proximity.

From Earth’s perspective, the Moon and planets will appear nearly aligned in the western sky shortly after sunset, though in reality, they remain millions of kilometers apart (Ilta-Sanomat). Venus, the brightest of the trio, will shine prominently near the Moon, while Jupiter will be visible slightly higher in the sky as a bright point of light. Mercury, the faintest and most elusive, will hover close to the horizon and may disappear within two hours of sunset (Ilta-Sanomat, Space.com via Tekniikka&Talous).

The best viewing window is around 11 PM in southern and central Finland, where the sun sets at approximately this time (Foreca via Ilta-Sanomat). In Oulu, sunset occurs closer to 12:15 AM, while in Rovaniemi, the phenomenon may be difficult to observe due to the near-constant daylight of the Midsummer period. Observers are advised to look westward immediately after sunset, as Mercury’s low position makes it the first to vanish into the twilight (Ilta-Sanomat).

Adding to the spectacle is the phenomenon of earthshine, where the Moon’s dark side glows faintly due to sunlight reflecting off Earth’s surface (Iltalehti). While the alignment has been visible for several evenings, tonight’s event is particularly notable for the Moon’s close proximity to the planetary trio.

Clear skies are essential for optimal viewing, though no special equipment is required. The event has been widely reported by astronomy-focused outlets, including Space.com, and was first highlighted in Finland by Tekniikka&Talous.
