Blue-green algae levels higher than usual in inland waters, marine areas calmer
Blue-green algae has been observed in Finland’s inland waters this week at levels higher than typical for this time of year, though no extremely abundant blooms have been detected. According to both MTV Uutiset and Yle, abundant algae has been recorded at six observation sites across Uusimaa, Pirkanmaa, and South Savo.
In contrast, marine areas appear calmer than average for this period. Neither MTV Uutiset nor Yle report any abundant or extremely abundant blue-green algae observations in coastal waters.
The algae situation is monitored weekly at around 300 sites nationwide. Yle notes that conditions can shift rapidly, sometimes within hours, and advises the public to check water quality before swimming or using it for recreational purposes.
