Fiber optic cables deliberately cut in Ylöjärvi, disrupting rail traffic
Police are investigating the deliberate cutting of fiber optic cables in Ylöjärvi on Midsummer’s Eve as aggravated criminal damage. The incident caused significant disruptions to rail services between Tampere and Seinäjoki, with train traffic suspended for several hours.
According to the Central Finland Police Department, the cables were severed near the Terätie area, adjacent to the railway section in Ylöjärvi. Authorities believe the act was intentional, though no suspects have been identified at this stage. Yle reports that the vandalism occurred between approximately 18:00 and 19:00 on 19 June.
The police are urging the public to come forward with any information regarding individuals or vehicles observed in the area during that time. Ilta-Sanomat (IS) specifies that both passenger cars and other vehicles are of interest. Observations can be submitted to the police via email at vihjeet.sisa-suomi@poliisi.fi (IS).
All three sources—Yle, Iltalehti, and Ilta-Sanomat—confirm that the incident is being treated as a serious criminal offense, with investigations ongoing. The disruption to rail services highlights the vulnerability of critical infrastructure to deliberate sabotage.
