Thunderstorms Hit Finland Overnight, Heatwave Conditions Persist in Parts of the Country
A thunderstorm front moved across Finland late Saturday and into the early hours of Sunday, bringing heavy rain and lightning strikes to several regions. MTV Uutiset reports that meteorologist Markus Mäntykannas had earlier confirmed the front’s approach, noting that thunder had already been observed in Sweden earlier in the day. The most intense activity occurred during the night, with thunderstorms affecting areas from southern Finland to southern Lapland. Helsingin Sanomat reports that by around 8 AM on Sunday, the first thunder front had already passed over Finland, with significant thunderstorm activity concentrated in Kainuu, North Ostrobothnia, and Lapland. In the south, a strong thunderstorm cell moved north of Tampere before weakening near Jyväskylä, while Helsinki experienced overnight rain (Helsingin Sanomat).
