Man rescued and resuscitated after sinking underwater at Masku sand pits
A man was rescued and resuscitated on Monday afternoon after sinking underwater while swimming at the Masku Riviera sand pits in Southwest Finland. The incident occurred shortly before 4:00 PM at the popular swimming area, which features two official beaches.
According to Marko Ahtikivi, the on-duty fire chief of the Southwest Finland Rescue Department, bystanders at the beach noticed the man struggling in the water and managed to pull him to shore before rescue services arrived. Ilta-Sanomat reports that the man received initial resuscitation from laypeople on the beach. Emergency medical services continued treatment upon the rescue department’s arrival, after which the man was transported to a hospital for further care. His current condition remains unconfirmed.
An eyewitness shared video footage with Iltalehti, showing rescue vehicles and a resuscitation tent near the shore. The witness described the resuscitation efforts as prolonged. The beach was crowded at the time of the incident.
The rescue mission was dispatched to Ruskontie, where the sand pits are located. The area, known locally as Masku Riviera, is a well-frequented spot for swimming during the summer months.
