Two asylum seekers detained after suspected illegal border crossing from Russia, marking first use of EU screening procedure on eastern border
The North Karelia Border Guard has detained two foreign nationals suspected of illegally crossing into Finland from Russia in the Möhkö area of Ilomantsi on Monday morning. The individuals, whose nationality, gender, and age have not been disclosed, were taken into custody on a road and immediately announced they were seeking asylum in Finland Yle reports that the suspects "did not resist detention" and "their intent was to contact the authorities," according to lead investigator Border Guard Captain Matti Kettunen (Helsingin Sanomat, Yle).
