Indonesian Man Remanded in Absentia Over Suspected Security Breach at Olkiluoto Nuclear Plant
The Helsinki District Court has remanded an Indonesian man in absentia on suspicion of disclosing a security secret, a treason offence under Finnish law. The decision was made on Monday, following a request by the National Bureau of Investigation (KRP).
The suspected crime occurred in August 2021 in Eurajoki, Satakunta, and is reportedly linked to the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant, according to information obtained by Yle. However, Detective Chief Inspector Juha-Pekka Karkkola of the KRP, who is leading the investigation, has not confirmed the connection to the nuclear facility. Karkkola also declined to provide further details on the nature of the suspicions, citing the ongoing investigation.
The suspect, described as approximately 50 years old, remains at large and has not been apprehended. Iltalehti reports that the investigation was initiated at the end of last year. Under Finnish law, a person can be remanded in absentia if they are not in the country or are evading trial.
Disclosing a security secret is punishable by a prison sentence ranging from four months to four years, as outlined in the Finnish Criminal Code. The case has raised concerns about potential security vulnerabilities at one of Finland’s key energy infrastructure sites.
