Potential New Sexually Transmitted Infection Emerges in Europe
International health experts are monitoring a possible new sexually transmitted infection (STI) that has emerged in several European countries. The disease, known as dermatophilosis or mud fever, causes scaly skin lesions, blisters, and pustules, which can appear on various parts of the body.
The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) reports that 70 cases of the infection have been detected in humans by mid-June. The majority of cases have been identified in France, Germany, Spain, and Sweden, with additional cases reported in Norway. Most infections have occurred among men who have sex with men, particularly those who have visited gay saunas or adult spas with designated areas for sexual activity (Yle, Ilta-Sanomat).
Transmission and Symptoms
The Dermatophilus congolensis bacterium, which causes dermatophilosis, has historically been found in animals such as horses and cattle. In Finland, the disease is known as kurarupi in animals, with occasional human infections linked to direct contact with infected animals (Yle). However, the recent cases in Europe appear to be spreading through close skin-to-skin contact, including sexual activity. Indirect transmission via contaminated surfaces has not been ruled out (Ilta-Sanomat).
In Norway, infections have also been reported among martial arts practitioners, suggesting that the disease may spread through other forms of close physical contact (Yle, Ilta-Sanomat).
Risk Assessment and Treatment
The ECDC has stated that the risk of dermatophilosis to the general population remains extremely low. The outbreaks have been localized and relatively small, with no severe complications reported. Those infected have recovered after treatment with common antibiotics, and in some cases, symptoms have resolved without medical intervention (Ilta-Sanomat).
Health authorities continue to monitor the situation, though there is currently no cause for widespread concern. The ECDC emphasizes that the disease is not a major public health threat at this stage.
