Finnish Entrepreneur Sentenced to Near-Maximum Prison Term for Sanctions Violations, Forfeiting €6.6 Million in Landmark Case

A Lappeenranta-based entrepreneur has been sentenced to 3 years and 8 months in prison for aggravated regulatory offenses after his company illegally exported 164 trucks and trailers to Russia in violation of EU sanctions. The South Karelia District Court issued the verdict on Wednesday, ordering the forfeiture of €600,000 in criminal proceeds and €6 million in assets, bringing the total financial penalty to €6.6 million (Yle). The court described the case as "exceptional in its nature and scope", with no known precedent in Finnish legal practice. The maximum penalty for aggravated regulatory offenses is four years in prison, making this a severe sentence—just four months short of the maximum. Yle reports that such a lengthy prison term is rare for regulatory offenses, as over half of similar cases are resolved through fines without court proceedings (Yle).
