K-Market in Pori destroyed by fire on Christmas Day, suspect faces aggravated vandalism charges
A K-Market store in Pori’s Uusikoivisto district was completely destroyed by a fire on Christmas Day, with damages estimated at hundreds of thousands of euros. The incident is being investigated as aggravated vandalism, and a man in his twenties from outside the area is the prime suspect.
The fire began in an unlocked wooden shed behind the store before spreading to the K-Market, reducing the building to ruins. Store owner Saara Tainio described the destruction to Yle, stating, "The store is completely leveled. Almost nothing was left." (Yle)
Southwest Finland Police detained the suspect during the preliminary investigation but later released him. According to authorities, the man was intoxicated at the time of the incident and has not admitted to the crime during interrogations. After starting the fire, he is also suspected of breaking a window of a nearby parked car, leading to an additional investigation for criminal damage (Yle, MTV Uutiset).
The case is being treated as aggravated vandalism due to the significant risk posed to public safety. The fire produced heavy smoke that spread across the area, though no injuries requiring hospital treatment were reported. Aggravated vandalism carries a potential prison sentence of 2 to 10 years, and the case will now proceed to prosecutorial review (Yle).
