Russia has ordered the temporary closure of several rail border crossing points with Finland, Estonia, and Latvia, effective Wednesday. The decision, announced by Russian state media outlets Tass and Ria Novosti, restricts the movement of people, vehicles, goods, and freight (Yle). The closures now also include border stations in Vyborg, Saint Petersburg (St. Petersburg-Finlyandsky), Svetogorsk, Värtsilä (Vyartsilya), and Lytta (Ljuttja) on the Finnish border, as well as Petseri (Pechory-Pskovskiye) in Estonia and Pytalovo in Latvia (Daily Finland). Politico reports that Russia’s Foreign Ministry has formally notified the Baltic nations of the decision, though it provided no explanation for the "temporary" closures or indication of when they might be lifted. Jukka Savolainen, Network Director at the European Centre of Excellence for Countering Hybrid Threats, suggests the move may be linked to preparations for a potential mobilization of additional Russian troops, serving as a message to Russian citizens that escape routes to the West are being cut off (Yle).
