Global Sea Surface Temperatures Hit Record Highs in June
Global sea surface temperatures have reached unprecedented levels in June, surpassing previous records set in 2023 and 2024, according to data from the EU’s climate monitoring services. The Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) and the Copernicus Marine Service (CMEMS) reported that temperatures peaked on June 21, with C3S recording a global average of 20.86°C—slightly above the 20.83°C measured on the same date last year. CMEMS data showed an even higher peak of 21.0°C, exceeding previous records by 0.1°C (Daily Finland).
The record-breaking temperatures are attributed to a combination of factors, including the onset of El Niño conditions in the equatorial Pacific and unusually high sea surface temperatures in multiple ocean regions in recent months. Yle reports that the rise in temperatures was anticipated due to the influence of El Niño, a natural climate phenomenon that periodically warms the Pacific Ocean and disrupts global weather patterns (Yle).
Experts warn that warmer oceans have far-reaching consequences. According to C3S, elevated sea surface temperatures can alter weather patterns, increase evaporation, and heighten the risk of extreme precipitation and flooding. Additionally, ocean warming contributes to sea-level rise, accelerates ice melt, and intensifies marine heatwaves, which pose significant threats to marine ecosystems, fisheries, and coastal economies (Daily Finland).
Carlo Buontempo, director of C3S, described the current conditions as potentially signaling the start of a new phase, one that could push global climate systems into "uncharted territory." He noted that with ocean temperatures at these levels and El Niño developing, further temperature records are likely to be broken in the coming months (Daily Finland).
