Pirkanmaa District Court Issues Verdict on Planned School Massacre in Tampere
The Pirkanmaa District Court has delivered its verdict in a case involving two young individuals accused of preparing a violent attack at the Santalahti campus of Tampere Region Vocational College (Tredu). The defendants, a 16-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man, were found to have jointly planned a school massacre targeting staff and students.
The 16-year-old received a one-year and five-month suspended prison sentence for preparing a serious crime against life or health. The court determined that both defendants had acted as described in the charges, which included drafting a detailed plan for the attack (Yle).
The older defendant, an 18-year-old, was ordered to undergo a mental state examination after the court ruled that his actions met the criteria for preparing a serious crime. The examination was requested by the defendant himself, provided the court found his actions aligned with the charges. His final verdict will be issued once the examination is completed (Helsingin Sanomat, Yle).
According to the prosecutor, the pair had access to two shotguns and incendiary devices, known as Molotov cocktails, which were intended for use in the attack (Yle). The court confirmed that the planned assault would have targeted the Tredu campus.
