Police report multiple disturbances during Hangö Regatta and Rantajamit events
The annual Hangö Regatta sailing competition in Hanko once again drew large crowds of young people, many of whom were more focused on celebrations than sailing, leading to numerous police interventions over the weekend. The Western Uusimaa Police described the night preceding Saturday as "very typical" for the event, citing a range of disturbances.
Helsingin Sanomat and Ilta-Sanomat report that police responded to multiple incidents, including fights, drunk driving, drug trafficking, and public order disturbances. Several suspected assaults were investigated, with some cases requiring medical treatment. A small number of arrests were made in connection with these incidents. Police noted that many of those involved were young people, some of whom were "extremely intoxicated" due to alcohol or drugs.
In addition to the Hangö Regatta, the Western Uusimaa Police also monitored the Rantajamit event in Lohja’s Aurlahd. Officers patrolled both on foot and by boat, with the early evening proceeding calmly. However, as the night progressed, disturbance-related incidents increased. Ilta-Sanomat reports that while investigating one suspected assault, police were alerted to another.
Authorities have not provided exact figures on the number of incidents or arrests but confirmed that the weekend’s events followed a familiar pattern of heightened activity.
