A technical malfunction at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport on Saturday afternoon disrupted baggage handling for both departing and arriving passengers, leading to delays of up to two hours.

The issues began shortly after 3:00 PM when a conveyor belt in the baggage drop-off area for departing flights malfunctioned, according to Finavia’s Head of Communications, Kirsi Luhta. The fault was repaired by around 4:00 PM, but not before a queue formed at the check-in area. While Luhta stated that the situation remained "fully under control," a reader described the scene as "chaos" (Iltalehti).

Luhta confirmed that all passengers were able to board their flights, though some baggage may not have arrived on time. The problem extended beyond departures, affecting the arrivals hall as well.

Delays for Arriving Passengers

Passengers on nine incoming flights experienced unusually long waits for their checked baggage, with delays lasting between one and two hours (Ilta-Sanomat). Luhta acknowledged the situation as "exceptionally long" and issued an apology on behalf of Finavia.

"This is an exceptionally long wait. Passengers were forced to wait for their bags for an regrettably long time. We sincerely apologize for this," Luhta said.

A passenger named Katariina, 37, reported around 5:00 PM that the arrivals area was crowded, with no baggage appearing on the carousels. "The atmosphere is starting to get tense, especially with so many small children present," she said (Ilta-Sanomat).

By 7:00 PM, nearly all affected passengers had received their baggage, with only one flight’s luggage still outstanding, according to Luhta.

Passenger Accounts

Another reader, Sakari, described the scene at the baggage claim area as surprisingly calm despite the delays. "One feels a bit sorry for the families with children," he said, noting that some passengers waited over two hours for their luggage (Iltalehti).

Sakari reported that by 5:30 PM, only a few bags had arrived, including his wife’s, while his own did not appear until nearly 6:00 PM. He criticized the communication during the incident, stating that only a couple of announcements were made, attributing the delays to "congestion."

Finavia confirmed that the initial fault in the departure check-in area cascaded into delays for arriving baggage. In total, passengers from nine flights were affected, with most luggage delivered by shortly before 7:00 PM (Iltalehti).

"At Finavia, we apologise for the inconvenience and long wait caused to passengers," Luhta said.
