Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi Visits Finland, Discusses Multilateral Order, AI, Ukraine War, and Arctic Security Amid Geopolitical Tensions and Human Rights Concerns

China’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Wang Yi, arrived in Finland on Sunday for a series of high-level meetings with Finnish officials, marking the first visit by a Chinese foreign minister to the country in over 20 years. Wang met with Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen (NCP) in Helsinki before traveling to Kultaranta, Naantali, to meet with President Alexander Stubb, where he was hosted at a dinner at the President’s summer residence (Ilta-Sanomat). President Stubb later shared on X (formerly Twitter) that the discussions covered "the future of the multilateral world order, UN reform, artificial intelligence, and Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine," while acknowledging fundamental differences between Finnish and Chinese societies. Despite these differences, Stubb emphasized the need for collaboration on "the key issues of our time" (Iltalehti).
