Finland recorded its most active thunderstorm day of the summer on Saturday, with nearly 2,000 lightning strikes detected by the afternoon, according to the Finnish Meteorological Institute. Ari-Juhani Punkka, an on-duty meteorologist, estimates the day’s total could reach around 3,000 strikes, though he notes this remains below extreme levels—Finland can experience up to 10,000–20,000 strikes on highly active days (Ilta-Sanomat). MTV Uutiset reports that Saturday was the hottest day of the coming days, with temperatures near the eastern border reaching 27–28 degrees Celsius, creating conditions conducive to thunderstorm development.
