Former British Intelligence Chief and Diplomat Meta Ramsay Dies at 89
Meta Ramsay, a former British intelligence officer and diplomat who played a key role in one of the Cold War’s most significant espionage operations, has died at the age of 89. According to an obituary published in Helsingin Sanomat, Ramsay passed away in Glasgow on 28 May 2026 (Ilta-Sanomat; Iltalehti).
Ramsay spent much of her career with the British foreign intelligence service MI6, serving in both Helsinki and Stockholm. Iltalehti reports that during her posting in Finland between 1981 and 1985, she was responsible for the defection of Oleg Gordievsky, a high-ranking KGB officer who became one of Britain’s most valuable intelligence assets in the Soviet Union. Gordievsky, who successfully fled to the West in the mid-1980s, died in Britain in 2025. The operation is described in the obituary as "one of the greatest successes of Western intelligence during the Cold War" (Iltalehti; Ilta-Sanomat).
Beyond her intelligence work, Ramsay had a distinguished political career in the UK. She was a member of the House of Lords as part of the Labour Party leadership and served as a deputy speaker (Ilta-Sanomat). Iltalehti notes that she advanced to senior roles within MI6 and was even considered a candidate for the position of director of the intelligence service.
