Emeritus Professor Kai Kristian Donner dies at 74
Emeritus Professor Kai Kristian Donner has died at the age of 74, Helsingin Sanomat (HS) reports in an obituary. Donner passed away on 24 May after battling an incurable illness for over two decades (Ilta-Sanomat).
Born in Helsinki on 22 May 1952, Donner studied zoology at the University of Helsinki, where he later founded an internationally renowned vision research laboratory. His groundbreaking work included research on the chemistry of visual pigment molecules and human visual perception (Iltalehti). HS describes him as a passionate lecturer and a dedicated leader who was "an exceptional support for the younger generation of researchers" (Iltalehti).
Beyond his academic career, Donner was a prominent cultural figure. He served as chair of the Ella and Georg Ehrnrooth Foundation and the Oskar Öflund Foundation (Ilta-Sanomat).
Donner is survived by his wife, author Annika Luther, and their eight children. His father was zoologist Kai Otto Donner, and his uncle was the acclaimed author and film director Jörn Donner (Ilta-Sanomat).
