Automated surname change process speeds up name adoptions in Finland
The Digital and Population Data Services Agency has introduced a faster, automated system for surname changes, allowing some applicants to receive a decision on the same day.
The new procedure, implemented at the end of June, applies to adults who apply online to adopt a surname previously used by a parent, grandparent, or great-grandparent. The agency states that the change is processed automatically if the requested name is already recorded in the population information system (Yle, MTV Uutiset).
Previously, such applications required manual processing, which could take longer. Now, eligible applicants may receive an electronic decision immediately, streamlining the process for those reclaiming a family name. The system is designed to verify the applicant’s relationship to the name’s original bearer through existing population records.
Both Yle and MTV Uutiset report that the automated procedure is part of broader efforts to digitise and simplify administrative services in Finland. The agency has not specified how many applications have been processed under the new system since its launch.
