Prosecutor files charges against five in Stora Enso logging case while clearing others over pearl mussel destruction in Suomussalmi
The prosecutor has filed charges against five individuals and three companies following the destruction of thousands of protected freshwater pearl mussels in the Hukkajoki River in Suomussalmi in August 2024. The incident occurred during logging operations at a site owned by Stora Enso, when forestry machines crossed the river nearly 400 times, according to Metsähallitus’ estimate (Yle), resulting in the death of an estimated 3,283 freshwater pearl mussels, also known as raakku (Ilta-Sanomat, Iltalehti).
