South and Central Finland Courts Hand Down Prison Sentences for Violent Crimes Against Adult Men
Finnish courts have delivered prison sentences in two separate cases involving violent crimes against adult men, with defendants convicted of offenses including aggravated deprivation of liberty, extortion, and assault.
South Ostrobothnia Court Dismisses Human Trafficking Charges
The District Court of South Ostrobothnia has dismissed charges of human trafficking against a couple accused of crimes in Lapua between late December and early February. However, the court convicted the pair—born in 1998 (woman) and 1997 (man)—of aggravated deprivation of liberty, aggravated extortion, fraud, and aggravated blackmail, alongside other offenses such as theft and drunk driving.
The woman received a prison sentence of 1 year, 11 months, and 10 days, while the man was sentenced to 1 year and 9 months. The prosecutor had sought at least three and a half years of unconditional imprisonment for both defendants. Yle reports that the couple had prior convictions, including fraud, theft, and drug-related offenses.
Central Finland Court Hands Down Lengthy Sentences for Brutal Assault
In a separate case, the District Court of Central Finland sentenced three individuals to several years in prison for a violent assault on a 36-year-old man in Laukaa. The victim was forcibly taken from his home, stripped naked, beaten with a baseball bat, and threatened with an axe. His hands and feet were bound, and a sock was placed in his mouth before a photograph of him was sent to his mother and a friend in an attempt to extort money.
The victim was later left under a truck at a terminal in Jyväskylä, where he managed to free himself and attract help. He suffered multiple injuries, including broken ribs, a fractured nose, and lung damage. Iltalehti details that the violence lasted approximately an hour and was described as humiliating.
The main perpetrator, 29-year-old Nestor Aarre Repo, was sentenced to five and a half years in prison for aggravated assault, aggravated deprivation of liberty, attempted aggravated robbery, and two counts of attempted aggravated extortion. Carmen Mirella Natashia Savolainen, 28, received four years, while Henrik Otto Konstantin Kuvaja, 34, was sentenced to three and a half years. The trio was ordered to pay €12,000 in compensation to the victim.
Repo’s sentence was increased due to a prior assault on the same victim in November 2025, where he and a 49-year-old man forced the victim into a car and beat him with a metal baseball bat. The 49-year-old received a prison term of one year and eight months and was ordered to pay €5,000 in compensation. All convicted individuals have appealed the verdicts.
