Unstable Weather Brings Rain and Flood Risks Across Finland
Finland is experiencing a period of unstable and cooler-than-seasonal weather, with rain showers affecting large parts of the country. On Tuesday afternoon, a broad low-pressure area moved over Finland, bringing showery rain to most regions, though some areas remained dry. Temperatures have mostly stayed around 15 degrees Celsius, though in some places, particularly in the south, they have dropped as low as 12 degrees in the heaviest rain (Ilta-Sanomat).
According to Ilkka Alanko, the on-duty meteorologist at Foreca, locally high precipitation amounts could lead to flooding in some urban areas. The driest conditions on Tuesday were expected around Kainuu, while the south saw the coolest temperatures in the rainiest zones. The rain is forecast to subside during the night between Tuesday and Wednesday, with dry conditions prevailing except in eastern Lapland (Ilta-Sanomat).
Midweek Weather Outlook
On Wednesday, the weather will remain unstable, with scattered rain showers across much of the country, though dry periods are also expected. A heavy rain area is set to move westward over Lapland, while showery rain will focus on the west coast and northern Finland. In the south, conditions will be temporarily drier, though intermittent rain showers may still occur (Ilta-Sanomat).
Yle reports that in Lapland, more continuous rain is expected due to a weather front, while other regions will experience a mix of wet and dry spells. The wind, which has been a factor earlier in the week, is expected to weaken during Tuesday evening.
Later in the Week
Thursday is forecast to bring heavy rain to southern Finland, including Helsinki, while rain showers are also expected in Lapland. In contrast, western Finland, North Ostrobothnia, and Kainuu will see drier conditions, with temperatures potentially rising to 22–23 degrees (Ilta-Sanomat).
Looking ahead, the rain may finally begin to subside later in the week. Foreca predicts that while some rain showers could still occur over the weekend, temperatures are expected to rise to 20–25 degrees, with some areas potentially reaching heatwave levels (Ilta-Sanomat).
