Confrontation at Fiskars Vintage Market Over Damaged Glass Item
A dispute over a glass bowl escalated into a heated confrontation at the Fiskars Vintage, Collectibles, and Craft Market on Sunday afternoon, with accusations of discrimination and inappropriate behavior by stall vendors.
The incident began when a 35-year-old man from Helsinki, who has a foreign background but has lived in Finland since childhood, told Ilta-Sanomat that his wife and mother were inspecting a glass bowl at a sales stall. The bowl accidentally struck an adjacent object, producing a faint clink. Two sellers at the stall immediately turned their attention to the women, accusing them of breaking the item and demanding compensation.
The man, who spoke to Ilta-Sanomat anonymously due to concerns over harassment, stated that the bowl had only minor marks, which were later confirmed to be manufacturing defects rather than damage from the impact. When he arrived at the stall with his two-year-old child to resolve the matter, he offered to pay for any damage.
"Show me the dent. I’m certainly willing to pay if something has been damaged," he said, according to Ilta-Sanomat. However, the situation did not de-escalate. Instead, one of the sellers repeatedly asked the man if he was stupid, while the other repeatedly said "when in Rome" in his face. The man interpreted this as discriminatory behavior.
The family left the situation unresolved but reported the incident verbally to the market organizer before departing. Tarja Mustakallio, the event organizer, later confirmed to Ilta-Sanomat that the sellers’ behavior was inappropriate. She stated that the marks on the glass item were indeed due to a manufacturing defect, not the impact.
"We spoke with these individuals, who had behaved improperly, together with a security guard," Mustakallio told Ilta-Sanomat over the phone. She added that the sellers were made aware that such conduct is unacceptable.
Mustakallio, who was not present during the incident, based her understanding on the man’s account. She assured that future events would enforce stricter guidelines.
"In the future, there will be further instructions that there is zero tolerance for any such behavior. Everyone must be treated kindly and equally, and no one should be treated like that," she said (Ilta-Sanomat).
The man later followed up with an email about the incident, which Ilta-Sanomat has reviewed along with Mustakallio’s response. Iltalehti also reported on the incident, confirming the key details of the confrontation and the organizer’s response.
