Man missing after presumed swimming trip in Lahti’s Karisto district
Police in Häme are searching for a man who went missing in Lahti’s Karisto district at Lake Kymijärvi, believed to have disappeared during a swimming trip. The search was initiated before 10:00 on Wednesday morning after the Häme Rescue Department had spent several hours searching for the man without success.
The alert was first received by the rescue department after 01:00 on Wednesday. According to duty fire chief Ilari Nokkanen, multiple search methods were employed, including a water diver, a surface rescuer, a boat equipped with sonar, and a drone with a thermal camera. The rescue department concluded its search at approximately 05:00, having failed to locate the missing man (Ilta-Sanomat).
Helsingin Sanomat reports that the man, originally from Espoo and born in the 1950s, was reported missing to the emergency center shortly after 01:00. The rescue service conducted searches in Karisto during the night but discontinued them after a few hours without results, after which the task was transferred to the police. Police have since continued the search but have not yet found the missing individual.
The conclusion that the man had gone swimming was drawn from evidence such as his eyeglasses being found on the dock (Ilta-Sanomat). Police have recorded a report of the incident and are continuing their search efforts.
