Bird trapped inside closed Yyteri spa hotel prompts rescue alert
A bird became trapped inside the closed Recreation Hotel Yyteri in Pori on Thursday, prompting a call to rescue services. A passerby spotted the bird on the second floor of the vacant hotel and alerted authorities in the afternoon (Iltalehti).
Duty fire chief Tero Järvelä confirmed that the rescue department did not dispatch a team to the scene. Instead, they contacted the hotel owner, who suspected the bird had entered through an open ventilation hatch. The owner agreed to assist the bird and install netting to prevent future incidents (Yle). Järvelä did not specify the species of the bird (Yle).
Hotel closure and financial struggles
The Recreation Hotel Yyteri, once a popular destination, has been closed since spring 2025. Its reopening was initially planned for summer 2026 following renovations, though no further updates have been provided (Iltalehti).
The hotel faced financial difficulties last year, with bankruptcy petitions filed in July and October. Both were withdrawn after the company settled debts with the pension insurance company Elo and the Tax Administration (Iltalehti).
Seasonal rise in animal-related rescue calls
The incident follows a recent increase in animal-related rescue calls in Satakunta. Fire chief Järvelä noted that people spend more time outdoors in summer, leading to more reports of animals in distress—such as wagtails stuck in ventilation shafts and a deer that fell onto a beet conveyor at the Sucros sugar factory (Yle).
However, not all calls require intervention. For example, fledgling gulls found on the ground do not typically need help, as their parents continue to feed them (Yle).
Yyteri’s popularity despite hotel closure
Yyteri, located in Meri-Pori, remains one of Finland’s most famous sandy beaches. Last July, Pori reported 125,000 visitors to the area (Yle). The hotel’s closure has not diminished the region’s appeal, though its future remains uncertain.
