Body Found in Sea Off Kruunuvuorenranta in Helsinki
A body was recovered from the water off Kruunuvuorenranta in Helsinki on Thursday evening, as authorities continue their search for a missing student from Lahti.
A diver from the Border Guard discovered the unidentified body in the sea early in the evening, according to Yle and Iltalehti. Eyewitnesses told Ilta-Sanomat that a Border Guard rubber boat transported the body to shore, where a white body bag was visible on land.
The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) is leading the investigation, treating the case as a determination of the cause of death. The NBI is working to establish the identity of the deceased and reconstruct the events leading to the death (Yle, Iltalehti). The Helsinki Police Department and the Gulf of Finland Coast Guard have also assisted in the search efforts.
The recovered body is part of an ongoing investigation into the disappearance of an Indian student who went missing in May. The student was last seen in the Kruunuvuorenranta area on 5 May at around 8 p.m. near a K-market, according to police information (Iltalehti). His most recent confirmed movement was traveling from Lahti to Helsinki on the Z-train earlier that day, arriving at approximately 5 p.m.
The Häme Police first reported the student missing on 21 May. The case has gained attention in India, with The New Indian Express and The Hindu covering the disappearance. The Hindu reports that the man moved to Finland in 2025 to study engineering at LUT University and that his parents last heard from him on 5 May. The family has since traveled to Finland and been in contact with authorities, while also calling for greater involvement from Indian officials in the investigation (Iltalehti).
