Deadly Shoe Factory Fire in China’s Fujian Province
A devastating fire at a shoe factory in Jinjiang, Fujian Province, has resulted in a significant loss of life, according to Chinese authorities. The blaze broke out at midday local time, trapping workers inside the building and prompting a large-scale emergency response.
Chinese President Xi Jinping described the incident as involving a "significant loss of life," as reported by the state news agency Xinhua. While exact figures on fatalities or injuries have not been released, China’s state television CCTV stated that people were trapped on the roof of the burning factory. Local authorities confirmed that several individuals remain missing or unaccounted for (Iltalehti).
A total of 183 rescuers and 35 vehicles were dispatched to the scene, where firefighters worked to extinguish the flames. By the time of reporting, open flames had largely been brought under control (Yle). Preliminary investigations suggest the fire originated on the first floor of the factory, with highly flammable shoe materials contributing to the rapid spread of the blaze, according to a local official cited by CCTV.
