A fire at the Kontula Shopping Center on April 6, which resulted in one fatality, was caused by a technical fault in an electrical device, police have confirmed. The preliminary investigation into the incident has now been completed.

The fire broke out in the early hours of Monday in a backroom area of the shopping center’s loading dock section. MTV Uutiset reports that the blaze originated in an electrical device, with no evidence of intentional human action or negligence. Chief Inspector Tuomas Lindholm of the arson investigation stated that the case does not involve suspicion of criminal activity (MTV Uutiset).

One person, a man born in the 1960s who worked at the shopping center, died in the fire. According to police, the deceased was lawfully present in the premises during his own time and had no connection to the fire’s origin. Yle confirms that the investigation initially treated the case as both an arson inquiry and a determination of the cause of death, but no criminal suspicions remain (Yle).
