Finland’s largest road transport underway as massive fuel tank heads to Kaskinen Port
Finland is set to witness its largest road transport operation on Thursday evening, as a colossal fuel tank begins its journey from Teuva to Kaskinen Port. The transport, organised by Vuorsola Oy, will carry a 300-tonne fuel tank—equivalent to the weight of around 150 passenger cars—manufactured by West Welding for use in a giant cruise ship (Ilta-Sanomat).
The entire cargo, including the transport equipment, will weigh approximately 500 tonnes, with dimensions of 15 metres in width and 14 metres in height. West Welding has described the operation as the largest in Finland and potentially the entire Nordic region (Iltalehti).
The fuel tank will be moved using remotely controlled SPMT (Self-Propelled Modular Transporter) trailers, specially designed for heavy loads. The transport is scheduled to depart from West Welding’s production facilities at 18:00, with the journey expected to continue into Friday morning (Ilta-Sanomat).
Extensive preparations and route modifications
The operation has required nearly a year of planning and significant modifications to the transport route. Roads and intersections along the way have been widened, and power lines have been rerouted underground or underwater to accommodate the oversized load. The transport will take place on closed road sections, with detour arrangements in place between Teuva and Kaskinen Port (Ilta-Sanomat).
Local municipalities and regional authorities have been involved in coordinating the logistics, ensuring minimal disruption to traffic while facilitating the safe passage of the cargo (Ilta-Sanomat).
This is the second of two large fuel tank transports, with both shipments destined for the maritime industry. The first transport was completed earlier, marking a significant milestone in Finland’s heavy logistics sector.
