Severe Traffic Accidents on Highways 5 and 3 Leave Multiple Injured and Prompt Police Investigations
A serious collision on Highway 5 in Alapitkä, Lapinlahti, last week left three people injured and prompted an ongoing police investigation into potential traffic safety violations. Meanwhile, authorities in Häme are seeking public assistance after a separate incident on Highway 3 involving a hit-and-run truck.
Collision on Highway 5 Under Investigation
On Highway 5 in North Savo, a passenger car traveling from Kuopio collided with a van coming from Lapinlahti in Alapitkä. Two occupants of the passenger car and one in the van were injured in the crash, which temporarily closed part of the road (Yle). The speed limit at the accident site is 80 kilometers per hour.
Police suspect the driver of the passenger car of gross endangerment of traffic safety, though the exact cause of the collision remains under investigation. Yle reports that authorities are examining why the passenger car partially drifted into the oncoming lane. Detective Chief Inspector Tiina Borg stated that the driver from Kuopio has not yet been interviewed.
Hit-and-Run Incident on Highway 3 Sparks Witness Appeal
In a separate incident on Wednesday, a passenger car overturned on Highway 3 near Iittala, Hämeenlinna, after a dangerous overtaking maneuver involving a maroon-colored truck. According to Ilta-Sanomat, the car was following the truck toward Tampere when its driver attempted to overtake. The truck suddenly moved into the left lane, forcing the car to brake sharply and swerve off the road, where it rolled onto its side.
The driver and a passenger in the car sustained minor injuries, and the vehicle was severely damaged. The truck driver did not stop at the scene, prompting Häme Police to request public assistance in identifying the vehicle.
