Violent Stabbing in Central Helsinki Leads to Detention of Entrepreneur
A 40-year-old man has been remanded into custody on suspicion of attempted murder and possession of a dangerous object following a violent stabbing incident outside the Apollo nightclub in central Helsinki early Sunday morning. The Helsinki District Court approved the detention on Wednesday, with the suspect facing multiple criminal charges.
The incident occurred around 3:30 AM on 5 July, after two separate groups—who did not know each other beforehand—spent the evening at the Apollo Live Club restaurant on Mannerheimintie. According to Detective Chief Inspector Jari Korkalainen of the Helsinki Police, an altercation began inside the venue but did not escalate into physical violence until after closing time, when the groups clashed outside (Ilta-Sanomat).
The suspect, a 40-year-old entrepreneur born in 1983, allegedly stabbed a 24-year-old man born in 1999 with a folding knife—a stiletto-type blade found in his possession. The victim sustained serious injuries to his torso and leg but was not in immediate life-threatening danger and has since been receiving hospital treatment (Ilta-Sanomat).
Multiple Suspects and Ongoing Investigation
The preliminary investigation has uncovered additional criminal suspicions, with a total of five individuals now suspected of assault. Korkalainen described the scene as a "large brawl" involving "a very chaotic and confusing situation," with most participants being men in their thirties (Iltalehti). Police have obtained video footage from bystanders, which is currently under review, though Korkalainen warned against publishing such material online due to potential privacy violations.
The suspect, who lives in a detached house in Espoo, is the CEO of a construction company he founded in 2015. While the company’s turnover grew last year, its most recent financial period was unprofitable (Iltalehti). He has a prior criminal record, including drug offenses, drunk driving, and assaults, though none as severe as the current charges (Iltalehti).
Alcohol is believed to have played a role in the incident, though the exact sequence of events remains under investigation. Korkalainen declined to provide further details, citing the ongoing nature of the case.
