Body Found in Helsinki Sea as Search for Missing Indian Student Suspended
The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has temporarily halted its search for an 18-year-old Indian engineering student who went missing in Lahti in May after a body was discovered in the sea near Kruunuvuorenranta in Helsinki. The unidentified remains were found by a Border Guard diver on Thursday evening, prompting authorities to shift focus to identifying the deceased.
The missing student was last seen in the Kruunuvuorenranta area on May 5, with his final confirmed sighting at a K-store in the district. Extensive land and water searches have been conducted in the area, involving the NBI, Helsinki Police Department, and the Gulf of Finland Coast Guard. Yle reports that Chief Detective Superintendent Olli Töyräs stated no further searches will take place for now, as the area has already been thoroughly examined.
Töyräs confirmed that the body was found in the same location where the student was last seen, raising the possibility of a connection between the two cases. However, he emphasized that the identity of the deceased has not yet been confirmed. "We are trying to determine and confirm the identity of the deceased person found at sea and also whether they are the person who was previously reported missing," Töyräs said (Yle).
A forensic autopsy and additional examinations will be conducted to establish the cause of death and the identity of the body. The NBI has stated that the investigation will take time, and no further details will be released until the process is complete. MTV Uutiset notes that, based on current information, no crime is suspected in the case.
The NBI will continue its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death, including the sequence of events leading up to it. Authorities have not provided a timeline for when the results of the autopsy and identification process will be available.
