Body of missing Indian student found in Helsinki identified
The body discovered in the sea off Kruunuvuorensanta in Helsinki on Thursday, 9 July, has been identified as an 18-year-old Indian student who went missing in May. The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) confirmed the identity of the deceased, who had been the subject of extensive searches in the area.
The student, who lived and studied in Lahti, was last seen on 5 May after traveling to Helsinki on the Z train in the afternoon. His last confirmed sighting was at the K supermarket in Kruunuvuorensanta (Yle, Iltalehti). The case had attracted attention in India, with The Hindu reporting that the young man had moved to Finland to study engineering at LUT University (Iltalehti).
Detective Chief Inspector Olli Töyräs of the NBI stated that the police would not continue searches in Kruunuvuorensanta at this stage, as the body’s identification had been confirmed. The NBI is now focusing on determining the cause of death, though no crime is suspected in connection with the case (Ilta-Sanomat, Yle, MTV Uutiset).
The body was found by a diver from the Border Guard during searches assisted by the Helsinki Police Department and the Gulf of Finland Coast Guard (Ilta-Sanomat). The NBI is examining the events preceding the death as part of its investigation (Ilta-Sanomat). Töyräs noted that official identification procedures would take time but that an update would be provided once the process was complete (Ilta-Sanomat).
