Finland braces for heatwave with temperatures nearing 30 degrees
A warm air current from the south is bringing rising temperatures across Finland this weekend, with meteorologists warning of potential heatwave conditions and strong thunderstorms in parts of the country.
Friday began with fog in southern and southeastern regions, but skies cleared as the day progressed, bringing summery temperatures nationwide. Yle reports that daytime temperatures reached between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius across most of the country, with only scattered rain showers along a weather front stretching from the west coast to North Karelia. Some thunderstorms were also possible in eastern Finland.
Weekend heatwave peaks in the southeast
The heat will intensify over the weekend, particularly in the south and southeast. MTV Uutiset meteorologist Liisa Rintaniemi states that temperatures may climb to nearly 30 degrees Celsius in southeastern Finland by Saturday, with the highest readings expected in Ostrobothnia and Northern Ostrobothnia. While much of the country will remain dry and sunny, strong thunderstorms are forecast for the south and southwest, with heavy rainfall possible in some areas.
In northern Lapland, temperatures will remain cooler, around 15 degrees, though MTV Uutiset notes that heat readings are possible even in central Lapland. The humid air may make the heat feel oppressive, particularly in eastern Finland.
On Sunday, the weather front will shift toward Kainuu, bringing thunderstorms to the south and southwest. The southeast could again see temperatures approaching 30 degrees, while the north will experience slight cooling.
Warm weather set to continue
According to MTV Uutiset, the warm summer weather is expected to persist into early next week, with conditions remaining relatively dry. However, Southwest Finland—a region prone to thunderstorms—may still see localized heavy rainfall.
