Finnish Defence Forces Restrict Air and Maritime Traffic Near Kotka Amid Drone Threat
The Finnish Defence Forces imposed temporary restrictions on air and maritime traffic off the coast of Kotka early Friday morning due to a potential drone threat. The restricted area was activated at approximately 4:00 AM and lifted at 5:25 AM, according to Iltalehti.
The Defence Forces stated on social media platform X that the measure was precautionary, aimed at ensuring public safety and providing authorities with operational conditions to counter any potential drones. No drones were detected in Finnish airspace during the restriction period (Iltalehti, Ilta-Sanomat).
In Russia’s Leningrad Oblast, 14 drones were reportedly shot down overnight, as announced by Governor Aleksandr Drozdenko on Telegram before 3:00 AM and confirmed by Russian state news agency TASS (Iltalehti).
Increased Focus on Counter-Drone Measures
The Finnish Defence Forces will begin training conscripts in counter-drone operations next year, reflecting a response to the growing drone threat. Testing of counter-drone systems will first be conducted by personnel this autumn, as outlined in a press release (Ilta-Sanomat).
The Defence Forces has prepared multiple layers of drone detection and countermeasures, including radar surveillance, electronic sensors, fighter jets, helicopters, and air defence systems. However, countermeasures can only be deployed once drones have crossed into Finnish airspace, as peacetime regulations prohibit intervention in another state’s territory or at the border (Ilta-Sanomat).
Recent Restriction Zones
In a short period, the Finnish Defence Forces has activated temporary flight restriction zones in eastern Finland four times, with maritime restriction zones imposed three times within the past week. These measures have been precautionary, based on preparations for potential drone incursions (Ilta-Sanomat).
