Former Chief Detective Sergeant Markku Tuominen, a prominent figure in Finland’s criminal investigations, has died at the age of 74. Tuominen passed away on 13 May in Nurmijärvi, as confirmed by his obituary published in Helsingin Sanomat on 4 July (Ilta-Sanomat, Iltalehti).
Born in Luopioinen on 30 April 1952, Tuominen began his career in the police force in 1975 as a junior constable at the Helsinki Police Department. He later transferred to the National Bureau of Investigation (KRP), where he served until his retirement in 2013 (Iltalehti). During his nearly four-decade-long career, Tuominen was recognised for his expertise in complex criminal cases and was awarded the Police Cross of Merit.
A career marked by high-profile cases
Tuominen’s obituary, published by his former colleagues, describes him as a "sharp-eyed, reflective, and fair-minded police officer" who was both approachable and humorous. Helsingin Sanomat (cited in Ilta-Sanomat) highlights his role in some of Finland’s most challenging investigations, including the infamous Bodom Lake murders, one of the country’s most notorious unsolved crimes.
Tuominen took a leading role in the Bodom Lake case in 2004, revisiting decades-old evidence from archived records. In a 2020 interview with Iltalehti, he described the investigation as "highly challenging in parts." Tuominen suspected Nils Gustafsson, the only survivor of the 1960 camping trip during which three teenagers were murdered, of being the perpetrator. He interpreted Gustafsson’s remark—"What’s done is done, 15 years is what I got"—as a confession. Gustafsson, however, denied making the statement and maintained his innocence throughout the legal proceedings. He was ultimately acquitted by the district court in 2005 (Ilta-Sanomat, Iltalehti).
