Primary School Teacher Remanded in Custody Over Suspected Aggravated Sexual Abuse of a Child
A 42-year-old primary school teacher has been remanded in custody on suspicion of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, following a hearing at the Itä-Uusimaa District Court on Thursday. Iltalehti reports that the court ruled in favor of remanding the woman, who has no prior criminal record within the last decade.
The suspected offenses are alleged to have taken place over a period of more than two years, from June 2024 to July 2026 (Iltalehti). The woman, who has children of her own, worked as a classroom teacher in Central Uusimaa during the last school term and has also served as a team leader in a sports club (Ilta-Sanomat, Iltalehti).
Under Finnish law, sexual abuse of a child occurs when a person commits a sexual act against a child under 16 that is likely to harm the child’s development. The offense is classified as aggravated if it involves violence, threats, or causes severe mental or physical suffering. It may also be deemed aggravated if the perpetrator exploits a position of trust or dependency, such as that of a teacher or coach (Ilta-Sanomat). Aggravated sexual abuse of a child carries a potential prison sentence of 2–10 years.
Neither Ilta-Sanomat nor Iltalehti were able to reach the lead investigator or the school principal for comment. The case remains under investigation.
