Temporary Aviation and Maritime Restrictions Imposed Near Kotka Due to Drone Threat
A temporary aviation and maritime restriction zone has been enforced off the coast of Kotka since approximately 4:00 AM on Friday, according to the Finnish Defence Forces. The measure aims to ensure public safety and maintain operational conditions for authorities in response to a potential drone threat.
Yle reports that the restrictions remain in place as a precautionary step to prevent risks to bystanders and to facilitate counter-drone operations if necessary. Ilta-Sanomat confirms that at least the aviation restriction zone was still active after 6:00 AM.
The Finnish Defence Forces state that the decision to implement such zones is not a sign of lowered thresholds for airspace or maritime restrictions. Instead, it reflects proactive measures taken when situational awareness indicates a need to secure airspace. Continuous monitoring and coordination among authorities are maintained to assess and respond to potential threats.
Recent developments in the region may have contributed to the decision. The Finnish Defence Forces note that Ukraine has intensified strikes against Russian infrastructure in 2026, including targets in Russia’s northwestern regions, which are critical for Moscow’s military operations. Given the proximity of these areas to Finland, the possibility of drones straying into Finnish territory has been acknowledged as a potential risk (Ilta-Sanomat).
This is not the first instance of such restrictions in recent months, with the Finnish Defence Forces having implemented similar measures at least three times previously.
