Child Drowns at Kempele Swimming Quarry

A child under the age of 15 drowned on Saturday at a popular swimming quarry in Kempele, according to authorities. The incident occurred at the Kalliomonttu quarry, an old rock quarry refurbished as a swimming area located on the border of Oulu and Kempele.

The North Ostrobothnia Rescue Department announced that the child was seen sinking underwater around midday. Rescue teams quickly lifted the child from the water, but resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful (Helsingin Sanomat, Kaleva).

The quarry, known for its clear water and diving platforms, has a maximum depth of eight meters. The Rescue Department confirmed that crisis assistance has been initiated to support the child’s family (MTV Uutiset, Helsingin Sanomat).
