Green Party MP Fatim Diarra Expecting First Child
Green Party Member of Parliament Fatim Diarra is expecting her first child, due in November. The 40-year-old politician shared the news with Iltalehti, revealing that she took a positive pregnancy test in a Parliament restroom.
Diarra explained that she and her husband, Jari Järvenpää, had discussed having children over the years before ultimately deciding to try for a child. She noted that motherhood was not originally an obvious aspiration for her. Iltalehti reports that in April, Diarra had expressed uncertainty about whether she even wanted children, stating in an interview with Me Naiset that her greatest life goal might instead be "leaving the world in better shape than it was when I arrived."
The MP also shared concerns tied to motherhood, particularly regarding the safety of her future child. Diarra told Iltalehti that she now avoids being out late due to the hatred targeting minorities and women in Finland. She expressed confidence that her child will experience racism and vowed to do everything in her power to ensure the child has "the strength to resist it and defend themselves."
Diarra, who was elected to Parliament in 2023, has previously served as the Green Party’s deputy chair and as chair of the Helsinki City Council. She turned 40 in May.
