Severe Thunderstorms and Flooding Hit Southern Finland
Southern Finland has experienced intense thunderstorms and heavy rainfall on Saturday, leading to flooding and weather-related damage across the region. Nearly 300 lightning strikes were recorded in Helsinki and the capital region by Saturday evening, with storms extending as far as Porvoo, according to MTV meteorologist Mette Mannonen. The thunderstorm front is currently moving westward along the southern coast, though some activity is expected to weaken overnight. However, Mannonen warns that thunderstorms may return on Sunday, particularly affecting the south and southwest (MTV Uutiset).
The severe weather has prompted numerous rescue operations. The Western Uusimaa Rescue Department reported handling approximately 40 weather-related incidents by 11:30 PM, most involving flood damage. In Espoo, flooding was particularly notable, with a gym in the city center experiencing significant water accumulation. Niko Kuosmanen, who filmed the flooding at Forever Lite gym, described water levels reaching 4–5 centimeters in the lobby and entrance area. Despite the flooding, the gym remained open, and Kuosmanen confirmed his workout proceeded as usual (Iltalehti).
Lightning has also caused property damage. The Central Uusimaa Rescue Department confirmed that a house in Järvenpää caught fire after being struck by lightning near the Aino Arena. No injuries were reported, though Lumi Vesanto, who filmed the incident, noted smoke coming from another building as well (Iltalehti). The Finnish Meteorological Institute had issued thunderstorm warnings for southern Finland earlier in the day.
