Child dies in drowning accident at Kempele swimming pit; safety measures under urgent review as community mourns
A child under the age of 15 died on Saturday afternoon after drowning at Kalliomonttu, a popular swimming pit in Kempele. The accident occurred shortly after noon at the deep end of the quarry-turned-swimming area, where a rescue diver retrieved the child from a depth of seven metres. Despite resuscitation efforts at the scene, the child could not be revived, Ilta-Sanomat reports. This is the third drowning incident linked to the site’s diving tower in recent years, with two of the three fatal accidents occurring at Kalliomonttu (Yle).
