Salmonella Outbreaks in Europe Linked to Contaminated Sprouts Claim Four Lives in Finland, With New Cases in Sweden

A salmonella epidemic that spread across Europe earlier this year has been traced to contaminated alfalfa sprout seeds, resulting in at least 109 confirmed infections and two deaths in Finland in 2025. However, a new disease cluster caused by the same bacterial strain, Salmonella bovismorbificans, was detected in Finland in spring 2026, adding 64 suspected cases, including two additional deaths Daily Finland reports.
