Storm Causes Widespread Disruptions and Rescue Operations in Southern Finland
A powerful storm swept across southern Finland over the weekend, bringing heavy rainfall, lightning, and strong winds that led to dozens of rescue operations and localized damage.
On Saturday evening, southern Finland experienced torrential rain and intense thunderstorms. The Finnish Meteorological Institute recorded over 20 millimeters of rainfall within one hour at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport. Approximately 650 cloud-to-ground lightning strikes were detected in Finland, with the majority concentrated in the southern regions (Yle). Foreca’s lightning counter reported 715 ground strikes on Saturday, primarily affecting Uusimaa and southwestern Finland, though meteorologists noted that such numbers are not unusual for the season (MTV Uutiset).
The storm continued into Sunday, with thunderstorms persisting in southern and southwestern Finland (MTV Uutiset). Emergency services were heavily engaged in damage control, responding to flooding, fallen trees, and other storm-related incidents.
Rescue Operations and Localized Damage
In Western Uusimaa, rescue services conducted over 40 operations during the evening and night, with most incidents involving flooded basements in Espoo. The Western Uusimaa Rescue Department described the night as unusually busy but manageable. "All in all, it was quite a busy night, but storms are the kind of operations we are prepared for," said on-duty chief Jesse Mikkonen (Yle).
Central Uusimaa saw around 30 rescue operations, particularly along the Kerava-Vantaa axis, with additional alerts in Hyvinkää and Nurmijärvi. Most incidents involved fallen trees, a common issue across the region. In Eastern Uusimaa, a downburst caused significant tree damage in Sipoo, where hundreds of trees were toppled. "A downburst swept through a relatively small area. Here in Sipoo, hundreds of trees have fallen. They are being cleared all over the place," reported on-duty fire master Antti Virtanen (Yle).
The Helsinki area, however, saw no major storm-related alerts. In Southwest Finland, the Turku region experienced severe thunderstorms around midnight, leading to water accumulation in a railway tunnel and a few rural fires. Kymenlaakso, Päijät-Häme, and Kanta-Häme also reported fallen trees, with the most activity in the Kotka region, though no major damages were recorded (Yle).
