Large Blue-Green Algae Bloom Detected at Espoo’s Laaksolahti Beach
An exceptionally large bloom of blue-green algae has been observed at Laaksolahti beach in Espoo, prompting authorities to advise against swimming in the area. The City of Espoo reported on 12 July that the concentration of algae at the beach, located on the shore of Pitkäjärvi, was classified as "extremely high" (Ilta-Sanomat; Iltalehti).
Blue-green algae, or cyanobacteria, can produce harmful toxins that pose health risks. According to the Finnish Environment Institute, exposure to the algae may cause symptoms such as nausea, eye irritation, and respiratory or nasal discomfort. In severe cases, the toxins can affect the liver and nervous system (Ilta-Sanomat).
Espoo Region Environmental Health is monitoring the situation and will provide an update on 15 July (Iltalehti). The public can track national blue-green algae observations through the vesi.fi website, where early summer sightings were first recorded in Rauma and Luoto in early June (Ilta-Sanomat).
Authorities warn that blue-green algae-infested water can be identified by small blue or green particles floating in the water or by a surface layer. Swimmers are urged to avoid contact with the algae until further notice.
