Road Collapse in Somero Destroys Road and Pedestrian Bridge After Record Rainfall, Repairs Underway
A section of Turuntie (Road 256) in Somero collapsed on Sunday evening following intense rainfall, taking with it a nearly new pedestrian bridge. The incident, described as highly unusual by authorities, has disrupted traffic and will require weeks of repairs. The collapse occurred amid an orange rainfall warning, with over 30 millimetres of precipitation recorded in one hour in the area Iltalehti reports. Locals at the site later reported measuring over 80 millimetres of rainfall within a few hours during the thunderstorm cycle (Ilta-Sanomat). Four roads in the area remain cut off due to flooding, depressions, or collapses, including Pappilankyläntie, which also gave way after the downpour (MTV Uutiset). Experts warn that climate change is increasing the risk of such events, as heavy rainfall becomes more frequent and strains aging infrastructure (Iltalehti).
