Supreme Court rejects Vastaamo hacker’s appeal; fugitive Kivimäki denounces "rotten system" as authorities demand surrender

The Supreme Court has rejected Aleksanteri Julius Kivimäki’s application for leave to appeal, finalising his prison sentence of six years and eleven months for crimes related to the 2020 Vastaamo data breach. The decision means the Helsinki Court of Appeal’s ruling from February remains in force, bringing an end to the lengthy legal proceedings in what is Finland’s largest criminal case by number of victims. However, Kivimäki has not reported to prison to begin serving his sentence, prompting police to issue an arrest warrant for him. In a message to his lawyer, Kivimäki expressed dissatisfaction with the Supreme Court’s decision, stating that “the system still seems rotten” and suggesting it was driven by “economic-political motives and a lack of courage” (Helsingin Sanomat). Kivimäki reiterated his criticism in a conversation with his lawyer on Monday evening, describing the Finnish legal system as politicised and alleging that unlawful decisions are made due to economic interests (Iltalehti).
