Massive €7.5 Billion AI Data Center Campus Launches in Seinäjoki
The first phase of a groundbreaking artificial intelligence (AI) data center campus has begun in Seinäjoki, marking the largest single investment ever made in Finland by a British company. The project, led by British operator Pure Data Centres Group (Pure DC), is expected to total up to €7.5 billion upon completion, with the initial €1.5 billion phase already underway.
The first construction phase will deliver a 110-megawatt data center complex, fully leased before completion. The campus, known as SJK01, spans approximately 150 hectares and is being developed in partnership with Finnish firm SDC Ventures. Once fully built, the site could reach a capacity of over 550 megawatts, positioning it among Europe’s largest data center complexes tailored for AI and high-performance computing.
Economic and Employment Impact
The project is set to generate significant employment opportunities in the region. The first phase alone is expected to create around 1,500 construction jobs, while the full development could support over 3,000 jobs over a decade-long construction period (Daily Finland). Seinäjoki’s city manager, Jaakko Kiiskilä, described the investment as transformative for the region, stating it would strengthen Seinäjoki’s appeal for future investments and drive demand across multiple industries (Yle). The project is also expected to bolster education and skills development in the area.
Finland’s Growing Role in AI Infrastructure
The Seinäjoki campus further cements Finland’s position as a key European hub for AI and data center investments. The country already hosts the LUMI supercomputer in Kajaani, one of the world’s most powerful supercomputers, with a sustained performance of 380 petaflops. Over 4,600 academic and industrial projects have utilized LUMI, with more than half of its computing power dedicated to AI research and innovation (Daily Finland).
Finland is also advancing its AI capabilities with the LUMI AI Factory and a next-generation AI-optimized supercomputer, expected to be operational by 2027. A government roadmap released in November 2025 emphasized prioritizing data center projects that deliver economic benefits—such as job creation, tax revenue, and innovation—while carefully managing their impact on energy systems, the environment, and national security (Daily Finland).
Project Readiness and Future Expansion
Pure DC confirmed that all necessary permits, electrical grid solutions, and the substation for the first data center building are in place. The company described the Seinäjoki project as the largest in its history, underscoring its strategic importance (Yle). With the first phase already fully leased, the campus is poised to become a major player in Europe’s AI and high-performance computing landscape.
